The European Union is set to bolster its ties with Azerbaijan through a significant financial commitment, as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a grant of up to €200 million aimed at enhancing the country’s transport, energy, and digital infrastructure. This investment is projected to catalyze approximately €2 billion in additional public and private sector investments. The announcement was made during a meeting between von der Leyen and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku, where discussions centered on fortifying energy collaboration, improving regional connectivity, and advancing the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
In a move to further cement relations, von der Leyen introduced the idea of a new connectivity partnership between the EU and Azerbaijan. This proposal comes amid a backdrop of increased Azerbaijani natural gas exports to the EU, which have surged by about 65% following a 2022 energy agreement, now reaching ten EU member states. President Aliyev highlighted this growth as a testament to the burgeoning energy partnership between his nation and the European Union.
Additionally, the European Commission president unveiled a €20 million support initiative targeted at Azerbaijani border communities. This program is designed to address key areas such as healthcare, mine clearance, rural development, and support for small businesses, aiming to enhance the quality of life and economic stability in these regions.
Von der Leyen’s visit to Azerbaijan is part of a broader tour of the South Caucasus, with plans to engage in further talks in Armenia. Her agenda underscores the EU’s strategic interest in the region, particularly in fostering peace and stability through economic and infrastructural development. The initiatives announced reflect the EU’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Azerbaijan while addressing critical regional challenges.
