WhatsApp has broadened its suite of digital payment services by launching a new feature that allows users to pay utility bills directly through the app. This enhancement enables users to handle everyday expenses such as electricity, gas, and water bills without needing to leave the messaging platform.
The bill payment service operates on the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, which encompasses a vast array of over 22,700 billers spanning 30 different categories. These categories include but are not limited to, utilities like electricity and gas, as well as FASTag, insurance premiums, credit card dues, and loan payments.
To utilize this service, users can navigate to the bill payment option from the main screen of WhatsApp. Once there, they can select the desired bill category and service provider, input the necessary account details, and verify the bill amount before proceeding with the payment. This streamlined process aims to make managing bills more convenient for users.
WhatsApp’s payment system supports various payment methods, including UPI, debit, and credit cards. Additionally, the platform offers features for users to view their payment history, keep track of upcoming bills, and manage multiple accounts with the same provider, all within the app.
This latest development underscores WhatsApp’s ambition to evolve into a more comprehensive digital-services platform. By integrating financial services such as bill payments, WhatsApp makes it easier for users to conduct routine transactions within its ecosystem. This trend reflects a broader movement among technology companies to merge messaging services with digital financial solutions, enhancing accessibility and convenience for users worldwide.
